Our journey to being a little greener everyday goes beyond brewing greener beer. As a sponsor of many major events around the world, we’re also collaborating with our partners to create greener moments.

Welcome to The Heineken® Greener Bar

A living experiment designed to showcase how we can reduce emissions, water and energy usage. Also a zero-waste initiative, the Heineken Greener Bar brings innovation from the motorsport industry across Formula E and 1 to improve the ways we upcycle, recycle and reuse.

Before you reach for an ice cold Heineken®, we aim to be as sustainable as we can in every step of the production process. That includes protecting water resources, reducing CO2 emissions, sourcing sustainably, brewing with green energy and reusing or recycling our packaging.

Sustainable farming means growing barley in a way that protects and improves the natural environment, conditions of farmers and welfare of all farmed species. We mix* both certified** as well as non-certified barley in our supply chain and are busy helping all our farmers to embrace a more sustainable future.

100% Green Energy

Looking ahead to 2040, we're set to become the first global brewer to reach full carbon neutrality from barley to bar, and our own breweries will be carbon neutral already in 2030. In countries like the Netherlands, we're already brewing our domestic volume for the Heineken® brand, using 100% green energy and, in several others, we're driving electric trucks to get from the brewery to you.

Recycling and reusing

We focus on minimizing the amount of packaging material we use, especially when it comes to plastic. Currently the ‘Green Grip’, our recycled paper alternative to plastic rings, is saving over 100 tonnes of plastic a year in the UK. And we’ll implement this solution in more countries soon. Our glass bottles and aluminium cans are not only recyclable, but also in practice for a large part recycled back into new bottles, cans, and many other products.

We like recycling, but are bigger fans of returnable.

It's even better for the environment. That’s why we've increased the amount of returnable Heineken® bottles. Did you know they can be reused multiple times? Better yet, our crate - the star of our packtypes – is so durable that it can be used for 10 years, and after that the material still can be endlessly recycled into new crates or other products. Also for cups at festivals we changed, in the Netherlands for example, to reusable plastic cups; that saves a lot of waste material.

*To be fully transparent, not all farmers can reach this sustainable standard yet. When sourcing our barley from the farmers, we follow the mass balance approach, meaning both certified as well as non-certified barley is mixed in the supply chain. We choose to do so because it maximizes the quality of blend batches, it’s a well-know approach in the industry, and enables more farmers to sell their barley on fair terms.

**Global Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI). At least Silver level of the Farm Sustainability Assessment tool is needed to claim. It’s every year audited by an external independent company, to ensure that everyone lives up to its promise.
